Raksha Bandhan Greetings Message/ 2016 Date, Occasional Gifts Idea, Rakhi Songs and SMS:
Raksha means protection and bandhan means bond. Also known as Rakhi, this is a Hindu festival which is celebrated to praise the precious bond of siblings mostly a sister and a brother. It occurs on the purnima of shravan month of Hindu calendar.

On this day the sister ties rakhi on her brother’s wrist which symbolizes her love towards vow to protect his sister through out his entire life. The festival become famous after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor had sent a Rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun when she needed his help this is how the festival grew in India. Another story behind this festival is of Sachi, the consort of Indra, who tied a holy thread around the wrist of Indra, who was defeated by the demons. Then Indra gained victory over the demons and  got his city of Amaravati back from them. The rakhi or a silken thread is tied by saying the following mantra:

"Yena baddho balee raajaa daanavendro mahaabalah;
Tena twaam anubadhnaami rakhshey maa chala maa chala."

The person who wears the thread is protected from all the evils. This is also the day when Brahmins change the scared thread which they wear. In the city of Bombay it is an occasion to offer coconuts in the sea.

In Indian homes the day starts with a feeling of celebration, a rakhi is either made or bought as variety of beautiful rachis are available in the market now. Traditional sweets and food are cooked on this day. A Puja is also done after which sister offers Aarti to his brother and ties the rakhi on his wrist and then applies a Tilak. The brother blesses the sister and gives her a gift. Then it is followed by some fun between brother and sister and also enjoying the sweets and food.

This is how the rakhi festival is celebrated in India celebrating the special bond of brother and sister.
