Doctor’s Day on 1st July is celebrated all over India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. With a lifespan of 80 years, he was born on July 1st (1882) and died on the same day in 1962. He was revered with India’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna on 4th February, 1961.
After completing his MBBS at Calcutta, he achieved his MRCP & FRCS from London. He started his career as a practising physician from 1911 in India. Later, he joined Calcutta Medical College as a teaching faculty. From thereon he moved to Campbell Medical School and later, to Carmichael Medical College.
He was revered not only as a physician and an educationist but also as a freedom fighter for he stood by Mahatma Gandhi in the Civil Disobedient Movement. His endeavours to bring about changes in the society brought him to become the leader of Indian National Congress and later the Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was also instrumental in the setup of many healthcare services and institutions for the upliftment of the people.
This day is celebrated as a tribute to Dr B C Roy’s dedication and salutes his efforts towards the betterment of medical scenario in India. The red carnation representing adoration, charity, dedication, sacrifice, bravery and audacity is the official symbol chosen to commemorate this day.
This day pledges allegiance to all the doctors in the medical profession and their vital role in our lives. This is a perfect day to recognise the gravity of job of the medical professionals and their contribution towards the community as a whole.
