Spot witnesses said the tremor sent office workers rushing out onto the streets. Mobile phone lines went down and traffic backed up in the capital moments after the quake, which lasted for more than a minute.
As a local TV report - Around 700 houses were damaged in 7.6 Richter scale earthquakes. President Felipe Calderon said there were no reports of serious damage.
“There had already been some six aftershocks and further ones could be expected in the next 24 hours” said Carlos Valdes Gonzalez - The director of the country's seismological service.
Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard's Twitter account said the water system and other "strategic services" were not experiencing problems and no damage was reported in the central or northern areas of the city.
Malia Obama, The US president's daughter was on a school trip in Oaxaca, south-western Mexico. A White House official said she was safe.
