The name Bidhannagar or we can say Salt Lake City popularly known to the world is a planned satellite township in the India state West Bengal provincial. The city was developed between years 1958 to 1965. It took a large ample amount of time to get the Kolkata people settled in this province. Presently it is the capital of the state and the area has become the most populated in the area of economic and social expansion and the specialty of the place is its IT hub.
Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy the then Chief minister of West Bengal has played a keen role in the development of this plan and the city was named Bidhannagar a tribute to the great person. The city was planned on the salt water lake which provides it the name of Salt Lake City too.
The salt city consist population of 218323 with males 111363 and female 106960 with literary rate of 90.44% this is far more than the national average of 74% which consist of male 93.08% and female 87.69% this makes the city popped out with a large number of educated personals. The area was the combination place of many salt lakes they are lower than the drainage channels.
The engineers have to first get the area filled up with mud and bring the level up so that the drainage channels get the right position. A Yugoslav company was given the responsibility. It took almost seven years to fill up the 12.35 kilometers of land with dredged silt.
This place once used to be the populated fishing place. In the year 1062 the Salt Lake City was officially born and the plan was approved by the Indian government on 9th April 1964.
